The European Scientists' Night was held at the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia with an extensive program

The traditional European Scientists' Night took place on 28 September 2018

At the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia, Salaspils, eight activities dedicated to science gathered more than three hundred visitors. Many thanks to Liepāja University Art Research Laboratory for participation in the exhibition "Mimicry". Photos by Lauris Galsons.

The migration of birds and bats was observed by almost 30 visitors at the Pape Ornithological Research Center of the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia (Rucava region).

At the Engure Ornithological Research Center of the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia in Bērzciems (Engure region), 50 visitors shared the mood of Lake Engure and the memories of ornithologists.

Congratulations!

On October 20, 2017, the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis award the Order of the Three Stars for special merits for the benefit of the State of Latvia and to appoint Dr. habil. biol. Isaak Rashal, academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, professor of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia, plant geneticists, also a leading researcher of the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia, head of the Environmental Genetics Laboratory.

The staff of the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia warmly congratulates its long-term colleague and outstanding scientist! Congratulations on the work done by Isaac Rashal and the recognition he has received!

 

LUBI's young scientist participates in the European Plant Biology Congress in Prague
Report: Changes in the anatomical structure of lime tree foliage in response to de-icing salt contamination, by G. Čekstere, A. Osvalde, T. Menard, P. Vollenweider.

This year The European Plant Biology Congress "EPSO / FESPB Congress 2016" took place in Prague, Czech Republic, on 26-30 June, with the participation of more than 700 scientists from around the world, representing not only Europe but also America, Australia, etc. presented reports on 34 different topics, such as plant-microbial interactions, epigenetics, phytohormones, responses to abiotic and biotic stress, effects of climate change on ecosystems, plant mineral nutrition, metal metabolism, root biology, and scientific communication, etc. Dr. Gunta Čekstere, Leading Researcher of the Plant Mineral Nutrition Laboratory of the Institute of Biology (LUBI), also participated in the congress of the report “Changes in the anatomical structure of lime tree foliage in response to de-icing salt contamination.” Co-authors of the report: Anita Osvalde from LUBI, Terry Menard and Pierre Vollenweider from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (Snow a a nd Landscape Research WSL).

 

Cranberry and Blueberry Growers Conference

On March 4, 2016, the annual conference of cranberry and blueberry growers took place at the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia in Salaspils, organized by the Latvian Fruit Growers' Association in cooperation with the Plant Mineral Nutrition Laboratory of the University of Latvia. The conference focused on: opportunities and challenges for the sale of cranberries and blueberries (Māra Rudzāte, LAA, SIA “Arosa-R”); mineral nutrition status of blueberries and large American cranberries in 2014 and 2015 (Anita Osvalde, LUBI); the effect of nitrogen on the yield and berry quality of the blueberry cultivar ‘Chippewa’ (Jana Apše, LLU); characteristics of blueberry and large cranberry varieties (Dace Šterna, LLU); situation in the market of large cranberries (Gundega Sauškina, SIA “Very berry”); CO2 and horticultural potential (Andris Špats, z / s “Gundegas”).

Renovation of infrastructure

At the end of 2015, the 1st round of the renovation project was implemented at the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia. The ERDF project has been successfully completed in Appendix 2.1 of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program. Priority «Science and Innovation» 2.1.1. Measure 2.1.1.3 of the measure “Science, research and development” Activities “Development of Science and Research Infrastructure” 2.1.1.3.1. sub-activity "Development of Science Infrastructure". The institute building was replaced with windows, entrance nodes were reconstructed and a security system was installed.
