Investigations in the laboratory are focused on different aspects of plant physiology (mineral nutrition, plant protection mechanisms, adaptation, etc.) under conditions of stress caused by disbalance of biogenic elements, heavy metals and salt toxicity in the growing environment.

The main research directions

  • Development of complex diagnostics and mineral nutrition optimization of different crop cultures (rape, winter wheat, vegetables, greenhause vegetables) with substantial value in economics of Latvia. Particular attention is paid on development of mineral nutrition regime for untraditional fruit cultures in Latvia – American cranberries, highbush blueberries, lingonberries, cloudberries.
  • Balanced mineral nutrition for tree seedlings (pine, spruce, aspen, lime trees, etc.).
  • Biochemical protection mechanisms of plants in the conditions of nutrient imbalance and stress caused by various environmental factors.
  • Peculiarities of mineral nutrition of wild plants.
  • Impact of environmental factors on mineral nutrition of different tree species in urban environment and forest.

Scientific and practical cooperation

Based on the results of theoretical research, the laboratory has successfully participated in applied research and consulting activities, establishing close cooperation with industrial companies in Latvia (JSC "Chemical plant" Spodrība",  „Laflora” Ltd., JSC" Līgo ", Ltd" Lienama-Alūksne ", etc.) ), state and local government institutions (JSC “Latvijas valsts meži”, Ltd. “Rīgas meži”, Riga City Council) in the field of optimization of mineral nutrition for various agricultural crops, forest and greenery plants. The laboratory has developed new compositions of  two- and three- component nutrient solutions “Vito“series, produced in JSC „Chemical plant “Spodrība”  and peat substrates for different plant cultures, which are produced in “Laflora” Ltd. Invention “Two – component nutrition solution “Vito is protected by patent Nr. 12677 (the author – Dr. biol. V. Nollendorfs).

International collaboration

The laboratory has international collaboration in the field of urban environmental pollution impact on plants and urban ecosystem with the scientists of Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) and Institute of Biology of the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland; element microlocalisation in plants – Centre INRA in France; invasive plant species biology and factors affecting plant species distribution in urban ecosystems - Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania, etc.

State awards for merits in favor of Latvia

We are very proud that our colleague Dr. biol. V. Nollendorfs received the award of the Latvian Employers' Confederation "For Innovations in Entrepreneurship", was a laureate of the competition 'Sējējs 2009" organized by Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia in nomination 'For Life Contribution in Agriculture'. In 2012, Dr. biol. V. Nollendorfs became a honorary member of Latvian Peat Producers Association, but in 2014, he was awarded by The Cross of Recognition of the Republic of Latvia for great achievements in agricultural and forest science.

Scientific and practical service possibilities

  • Complex diagnostics of plant mineral nutrition, determining the 12 essential nutrients - N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo, B, as well as salinity (Na, Cl) in soils (substrates), plant material and irrigation water to evaluate plant nutrient status.
  • Environmental monitoring research - determination of nutrients and heavy metals in various objects of biological origin to assess the environmental quality.
  • Assessment of the impact of products of organic origin on the nutrient supply of plants.
  • Development of new compositions of nutrient solutions and peat substrates for for growing and fertilizing different agricultural and ornamental crops.
