Ģeobotānikas laboratorija dibināta 2007. gada 17. aprīlī ar mērķi izveidot Latvijas augāja izpētes centru.
Laboratorijas pētnieciskais virziens ir saistīts ar 1) Latvijas augāja un augu sabiedrību aprakstīšanu, klasifikāciju, kā arī dabisko un antropogēno faktoru ietekmi uz šo sabiedrību struktūru, izplatību un attīstību, 2) reto augu sugu izplatību ietekmējošo faktoru izpēti un modelēšanu.
Ģeobotānikas pirmsākumi Latvijā meklējami jau 1950. gados, kad LU Bioloģijas institūtā tika uzsākta Latvijas veģetācijas izpēte.
Esam vienmēr atvērti starptautiskai sadarbībai augstāk minētajos pētījuma virzienos.

Žurnāla aizsākumi meklējami Latvijas Universitātes Ģeogrāfijas un Zemes zinātņu fakultātes Bioģeogrāfijas laboratorijā, vēlāk - Latvijas Universitātes Bioloģijas institūtā prof. Māra Laiviņa vadībā un kopš 2015. gada – LVMI Silava. Šobrīd rakstu krājums atrodas Latvijas valsts mežzinātnes institūta “Silava” paspārnē.
